The gourd and the bombilla
Choosing the gourd (the vessel used to drink mate) and the bombilla (the filtered straw) is essential.
Gourds can be made of natural squash, wood, or modern materials like ceramic or stainless steel. Each material offers a different experience in terms of taste and heat retention.
Ease of cleaning
Materials like stainless steel or ceramic are generally easier to care for than natural squash.
Budget
Mate kit prices vary with the materials involved. Set a budget while keeping in mind that quality and durability can justify a higher cost.
Your choice of mate kit will come down to your personal preferences in taste, how much you value quality and durability, and how you plan to drink your mate.
How to prepare a traditional mate with your kit?
Once you've got your mate kit, all that's left is the preparation!
Here's how to prepare your mate in a gourd, to get the most out of its flavors and the experience:
- Fill your mate gourd three-quarters full with mate.
- Tilt the gourd slightly so the leaves gather on one side, creating an empty space on the other.
- Gently pour lukewarm or cold water over the tilted leaves. This preliminary step lets the leaves moisten gently, preparing an optimal brew without burning them.
- Let your gourd rest for 5 to 10 minutes. This waiting time lets the leaves absorb the water and helps form the mate "mountain", essential for a successful brew.
- Insert the bombilla into the gourd, carefully, anchoring it firmly at the bottom beside the "mountain" of leaves.
- Slowly pour the hot water (ideally between 70°C and 80°C, never boiling) into the free space created earlier, to gently extract the flavors without harming the yerba's beneficial properties.
