AN EXCEPTIONAL NATURAL GOURD

THE SQUASH, THE ORIGIN OF THE GOURD

Our mate gourds are made from the sturdiest squashes, grown in southern Brazil.

These squashes are recognized as the best for gourd making thanks to their shape and thickness.

After harvest, the squash is emptied then dried for several months, to acquire the resilient properties of wood.

AT THE HEART OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

This is when our artisan, Cristian, begins his meticulous work.

By hand, he dresses the squash in leather and shapes feet to protect and stabilize it. He then crafts a made-to-measure band and chisels it by hand, before fitting it to the top of the mate gourd.

That's why our gourds are unique. Total production time, from the growth of the squash to leaving Cristian's workshop, is between 12 and 18 months.

Alongside your artisan gourd, treat yourself to our range of organic mate, carefully selected for its unmatched flavor.

Tout savoir sur votre Camionero Mate Gourd - Alpaca

Do I need to cure this gourd before the first use?
Yes, curing is essential before the first use of a calabash gourd. Because our gourds are pre-cured and pre-smoothed by our craftsman, a single night is enough: fill it with mate leaves and hot water at 85 °C without ever going above the rim, leave it to stand for 12 h, empty it, scrape the inside with a spoon to smooth the walls, then let it air-dry with the opening facing up. Every step is set out in our step-by-step curing guide.
How do I look after a calabash gourd day to day?
Simply rinse it with hot water, no soap, then leave it to dry with the opening facing up. Dried properly between two sessions, it will stay with you for years. See our care guide and our tips on removing stains.
What is the capacity, and how much mate should I use?
This Camionero gourd holds around 200 to 250 ml. Allow 25 to 30 g of leaves for a 200 ml gourd, with water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. The full walkthrough is in our guide to the traditional preparation of mate.
What is the alpaca used for the rim?
Alpaca is a silvery alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, emblematic of South American silverwork. Worked by hand, it does not oxidise and keeps its shine over the years.
Is every gourd really one of a kind?
Yes. Every gourd is shaped by hand from a natural calabash: its form, its colour and its details vary slightly from one piece to the next, which makes yours truly one of a kind.
