What exactly is maté?

Yerba mate is a plant derived from the yerba mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis), a species belonging to the holly family that produces small berries which bloom into flowers.

The leaves are hand-picked, dried and cut before consumption.
What makes the plant special is that it is one of the very few plants that produces caffeine, and therefore provides stimulation when consumed.

Mate was actually first cultivated by the Guarani and Tupi peoples, native to Paraguay and southern Brazil respectively, who believed it offered both medicinal and supernatural benefits.
Once Spanish colonization of Paraguay was established in the 17th century, the consumption of hot infusion gradually began to spread to parts of Argentina, Uruguay, and beyond.

What are the benefits of maté?

Yerba mate is first and foremost a natural stimulant, which is its best-known and most appreciated benefit among consumers. Its leaves are full of numerous active ingredients such as mateine, iron, magnesium, calcium, and vitamins (A, B1, B2, B5, C, and E).

Yerba improves your cognitive performance , such as your ability to learn, perceive, and concentrate.

Yerba mate is also beneficial to health. Very rich in antioxidants (twice as much as green tea), it helps prevent certain types of cancer and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How to drink maté?

The South American beverage can be consumed in various forms:

Traditionally, maté is drunk using a gourd and a bombilla. The gourd is a container made of pumpkin, glass, wood or steel, in which the yerba is infused with hot water.
The bombilla (or filter straw) is a straw used to filter and drink the infusion.

- In a tea ball
