The YVY Imperial Torpedo Mate Gourd is the ultimate expression of high-quality craftsmanship. Its imposing silhouette and elegant design make this gourd a jewel for any mate enthusiast.
Here's what distinguishes this calabash:
- 100% handcrafted
- Brazilian pumpkin
- Alpaca leather banding and hand-carved details
- Hand-chiseled bronze upper rim
- Covered in hand-stitched dyed leather
- Approximately 250ml
Each piece is unique, and every detail is meticulously crafted over many months. This unparalleled level of craftsmanship means we can only produce a very limited number of pieces .
The Torpedo Imperial mate gourd is the most elaborately crafted torpedo model.
Indeed, the engravings on the alpaca and bronze are done by hand by our artisan in Uruguay. The patterns are all unique and give a Guarani touch to this magnificent object. A layer of bronze fully covers the inside of the Alpaca ferrule.
Measuring 11.5 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter, the gourd holds between 150 ml and 300 ml and can accommodate up to 25 g of yerba mate. As the gourd is entirely handcrafted, capacity and dimensions may vary.
NB: Our gourds are not cured, and to enjoy your gourd for as long as possible and avoid altering the taste of the mate, we strongly recommend that you cure it.

AN EXCEPTIONAL NATURAL GOURD
THE SQUASH, THE ORIGIN OF THE GOURD
Our mate gourds are made from the most resistant gourds, grown in the southern region of Brazil.
These gourds are recognized as the best for making calabashes thanks to their shape and thickness .
After harvesting, the squash is emptied and then dried for several months, in order to acquire the resistant properties of wood.
AT THE HEART OF CRAFTSMANSHIP
It is after this that our craftsman, Cristian, begins his meticulous work.
By hand, he will cover the gourd with leather and form feet to protect and stabilize it . He will then make a custom-made rim and hand-carve it before attaching it to the top of the gourd used for maté.
That's why our gourds are unique . The total production time, from the gourd growing until it leaves Cristian's workshop, is between 12 and 18 months .
In addition to your handcrafted gourd, opt to discover our range of organic mate , carefully selected for their unparalleled flavor.
Why mate?
Mate is a traditional South American beverage made from the leaves of the yerba mate tree. It is rich in antioxidants , vitamins , and minerals , and has stimulating properties similar to those of coffee and tea. It can help improve concentration , energy , and digestion .
How to prepare and consume maté?
Mate is traditionally prepared in a gourd and consumed with a bombilla, a metal filter straw. The gourd is filled about two-thirds with yerba mate, hot water (not boiling, around 70-80°C) is added, and the sipping is done through the bombilla.
When to drink maté?
Yerba mate can be consumed at any time of day, depending on individual preferences and needs. Because it contains caffeine, it is often enjoyed in the morning or early afternoon for an energy boost and improved concentration.
What does maté taste like?
We carefully select our different yerba mate for their exceptional flavors: sweet and complex , very close to the flavor of a green tea .
