An imperial mate gourd in natural calabash, dressed in undyed raw leather with an alpaca rim. Each gourd is shaped by hand in Argentina — the shade of the leather, the grain of the gourd and the braid vary from one piece to the next.

Raw leather

Where most gourds are dressed in dyed leather, this one keeps the natural shade of the hide, somewhere between honey and sand. The saddlery is built with a double stitch, and a leather braid runs from the rim down to the foot — handwork of a rare order.
The leather takes on a patina with use: after a year, your gourd will look like no other!

A smooth alpaca rim and a chased band

CAROB WOOD, THE ORIGIN OF THIS GOURD

Our gourds are carved from the noble wood of the carob tree, one of Argentina's most emblematic trees. This dense, patiently dried wood is renowned for its exceptional sturdiness, warm grain and longevity — qualities that make it an outstanding material for crafting mate gourds.

Once a piece of wood has been selected for the beauty of its grain, it is hand-turned and sculpted in our partner artisan's workshop. Each gourd is then polished piece by piece, until the natural nuances of the carob wood are revealed — a wood that develops a patina over the cebadas and grows more beautiful with time.

Do I need to cure this gourd before the first use?
Yes, curing is essential before the first use of a calabash gourd. Because this gourd is pre-cured and pre-smoothed by the craftsman, a single night is enough: fill it with mate leaves and hot water at 85 °C without ever going above the rim, leave it to stand for 12 h, empty it, scrape the inside with a spoon to smooth the walls, then let it air-dry with the opening facing up. How do I look after the raw leather?
A dry cloth, and nothing else. Raw leather is undyed: it takes on a patina naturally from the touch of your hands and darkens slightly over the months. Use no soap, no cream and no oil, and never submerge it — rinsing is done from the inside, with hot water, opening facing down.
How do I look after the gourd day to day?
Simply rinse it with hot water, without soap, then leave it to dry with the opening facing up. Well dried between two sessions, it will stay with you for years. See our care guide and our tips on removing stains.
What is its capacity and how much mate does it take?
This gourd holds around 230 ml — each gourd being natural, the capacity varies slightly from one piece to the next. Allow 25 to 30 g of leaves per 200 ml, with water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. The full step-by-step is in our traditional preparation of mate.
How does it differ from the Imperial Alpaca Chased?
The rim: here it is smooth, set on a chased band, whereas the Imperial Alpaca Chased is chased all over. And the leather: this one is raw, left in its natural shade, while the other comes in black or ochre. The same imperial shape, two aesthetics.
Where is this gourd made?
By hand, in Argentina. The gourd is mounted, dressed in raw leather sewn with a double stitch, then banded with alpaca — every stage is carried out by a craftsman, with no moulding and no mass production.
Is each gourd really unique?
Yes. Each piece is shaped from a natural gourd: its form, the shade of the leather, the grain and the fall of the braid vary slightly from one to the next. Yours will look like no other — and will take on its own patina with use.
Which bombilla should I use with this gourd?
