Summary
How to prepare an iced mate infusion?
There are two ways to prepare an iced mate infusion. You can:
- Infuse the mate hot, then cool it
- Cold brewing mate
Method 1: Infuse the mate hot then cool it
With this brewing method, you can have iced mate in no time .
In fact, mate infuses very quickly when hot , allowing the drink to be cooled and enjoyed cold in less than 10 minutes.
We highly recommend our gourmet recipes for organic mate infusions , created especially for this type of infusion.
Here are the different ways to make iced mate with a hot infusion.
In a teapot or tea ball or French press
Recipe for 1L of iced mate:
-
Heat the water :
- Heat water until it reaches about 70-80°C, before boiling.
-
Infuse the mate :
- Pour about 2 to 4 tablespoons of mate tea into your teapot, French press, or even directly into a one-liter saucepan.
- Pour 500ml of hot water over the mate and let it infuse for at least 10 minutes (for our infusion recipes so that the fruits rehydrate and diffuse their flavor correctly).
Remember to experiment! You are encouraged to try different brewing times to find your own balance.
Top up with 300/400ml of cold water to cool the preparation .
-
Filter the infusion :
- If you brewed directly in the teapot or saucepan, use a strainer to strain the mate infusion into a large carafe, pitcher, or glass bottle.
- If you used a French press, simply press the plunger to filter the mate and pour the preparation into your favorite carafe.
-
Add ice cubes and pour the infusion :
- Fill a carafe with ice cubes.
- Pour the mate infusion over the ice cubes. This method will quickly cool your mate.

Method 2: Cold brew the mate
Unlike method 1, this brewing method will take longer .
In fact, the heat of the water allows the maximum amount of aroma to be extracted from the mate leaves.
Therefore, directly cold infusion will extract the aromas well, but with more difficulty. You will therefore have to be patient.
Whether using mate bags , a teapot, or a French press, here's how to cold brew.
Recipe for 1L of iced mate:
Teapot:
- Place 1 to 2 tablespoons (about 16g) of mate in the teapot.
- Add cold water.
- Let it steep in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours.
- Strain and serve with ice cubes.
French Press:
- Put 1 to 2 tablespoons (about 16g) of mate in the French press.
- Fill with cold water.
- Let it steep in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours.
- Push the plunger, strain and serve with ice cubes.
Mate bags:
- Place 4 mate bags in a carafe or glass bottle. Add cold water.
- Let it steep in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours.
- Remove the bags and serve with ice cubes.
These methods allow you to prepare a refreshing and flavorful iced mate effortlessly.

An iced mate in a gourd: Tereré
Tereré is a traditional drink from Paraguay and parts of Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia.
It is the iced version of mate , consumed mainly to cool down during hot summer days.
Tereré is prepared and served in a mate gourd with a bombilla , like traditional hot mate, but with iced or cold water .
How to prepare a Tereré mate?
-
Fill the mate gourd
- Fill the gourd two-thirds full with yerba mate .
- Tilt the gourd so that the leaves gather on one side, forming a small hollow, the well.
-
Add cold water
- Pour cold/iced water directly into a mate thermos . Our thermos keeps water ice cold for 96 hours!
- Pour the cold water into the gourd, filling the well formed by the mate. Wait a few moments for the leaves to absorb the water.
-
Add the bombilla
- Insert the bombilla into the well. The bombilla should be placed so that the filter is well immersed in the mate.
-
Serve and enjoy
- Drink the Tereré with the bombilla. Continue filling until the mate is "washed" (no more flavor).
Tereré is not only a perfect thirst-quenching drink for summer, but also a friendly way to share a moment with friends. Try this method and enjoy the freshness and unique flavors of Tereré!
