The Chiseled Torpedo Gourd is one of the great classics of Argentine mate culture, revisited here in its most refined version. Carved from noble carob wood (algarrobo), it combines sturdiness, elegance and artisan character.

Its torpedo shape — slightly rounded at the center, narrower at the ends — offers a perfect grip. Comfortable and well-balanced, it travels easily. It is the shape Argentine materos prefer for everyday use.

Its signature detail: a hand-chiseled Alpaca band, engraved with a delicate motif that varies with the artisan's inspiration.

Unlike traditional squash gourds, carob wood only needs light curing: Curing a wooden mate gourd. Sturdy, dense and naturally moisture-resistant, it will take on a soft patina, mate after mate.

CAROB WOOD, THE ORIGIN OF THIS GOURD

Our gourds are carved from the noble wood of the carob tree, one of Argentina's most emblematic trees. This dense, patiently dried wood is renowned for its exceptional sturdiness, warm grain and longevity — qualities that make it an outstanding material for crafting mate gourds.

Once a piece of wood has been selected for the beauty of its grain, it is hand-turned and sculpted in our partner artisan's workshop. Each gourd is then polished piece by piece, until the natural nuances of the carob wood are revealed — a wood that develops a patina over the cebadas and grows more beautiful with time.

Does this wooden gourd need curing before the first use?
Yes, but carob wood needs only a light curing, far shorter than that of a calabash gourd. Feed the inside with a knob of unsalted butter or a neutral oil, let it soak in, fill it with mate, pour in hot water at 70–80 °C up to the level of the rim, leave it to stand, then rinse with lukewarm water and no soap and let it air-dry with the opening facing up. How is curing wood different from curing a calabash?
Wood needs to be fed — oiling protects the fibre and stops it drying out — whereas a calabash mainly needs to be scraped and smoothed.
How do I look after this gourd day to day?
Rinse it with lukewarm water and no soap, wipe it, then let it air-dry with the opening facing up or tilted. A light oiling from time to time keeps the wood supple and glossy.
What is the capacity, and how much mate should I use?
This gourd holds around 200 ml. Allow 25 to 30 g of leaves for a 200 ml gourd, with water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. See our guide to the traditional preparation of mate.
What wood is it turned from?
From solid carob wood, a dense South American species prized for its resistance to damp and its longevity.
What is the rim made of?
The rim is chased alpaca, worked by hand. Alpaca is a silvery alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, emblematic of South American silverwork: it does not oxidise and keeps its shine.
