Our wide, exceptional range is ideal for exploring - and falling for - the South American ritual.
What exactly is mate?
Yerba mate is a plant from the yerba mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis), a species of the holly family that produces small berries which blossom into flowers.
The leaves are hand-picked, dried and cut before drinking.
What makes the plant special is that it is one of the very few plants that produces caffeine, providing stimulation when consumed.
Mate was in fact first cultivated by the Guarani and Tupi peoples, native to Paraguay and southern Brazil respectively, who believed it offered both medicinal and supernatural benefits.
Once Spanish colonization of Paraguay took hold in the 17th century, the hot infusion gradually began to spread through parts of Argentina, Uruguay and beyond.
What are the benefits of mate?
Mate is first and foremost a natural stimulant - its best-known and most appreciated benefit. Its leaves are packed with active compounds such as mateine, iron, magnesium, calcium and vitamins (A, B1, B2, B5, C and E).
Yerba supports your cognitive performance, such as your ability to learn, perceive and concentrate.
Yerba mate is also valued for health: very rich in antioxidants (twice as much as green tea), it is credited with protective effects and may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
How to drink mate?
The South American drink can be enjoyed in several forms:
- In a gourd
Traditionally, mate is drunk using a gourd and a bombilla. The gourd is a vessel made from squash, glass, wood or steel, in which the yerba is brewed with hot water.
The bombilla (or filtered straw) is the straw used to filter and drink the infusion.
- In a tea infuser
- In a French press
- In a tea bag
When to drink mate?
We recommend drinking mate first thing in the morning for a boost. Concentrated in mateine, yerba is a natural stimulant. Your brew will help you fight physical and mental fatigue throughout the day.
Of course, you can also drink it at lunch, at work, and even after sport. Yerba is a favorite among athletes and footballers for its help with recovery.
