An exceptional carob wood gourd, hand-carved from solid carob wood (algarrobo), selected for its density and resistance to moisture. Each gourd is chosen for its grain and hand-faceted by our partner craftsman. The inside is hollowed by hand, not machined: the walls keep the marks of the tool. The result: a solid gourd, heavy in the hand, made to last for years.

Black lacquer, bare wood: the meeting that gives the piece its name
On the Fusion, black lacquer covers the base and rises in points towards the neck, leaving the bare wood to show through in wide varnished panels. The boundary between the two is drawn with a brush, piece by piece. The one you receive is unique. Over time, the bare wood develops a patina and warms up, while the black stays deep.

Four nails, one constellation
On the bare wood face, four nails trace the Southern Cross, the Cruz del Sur. It is the best-known constellation of the southern sky: you can see it on the flags of Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, and it has always served as a landmark for navigators and for the gauchos of the pampa. Discreet, it reminds you with every sip where mate comes from.

With its 240 ml, the Fusion is one of our roomiest gourds, ideal for a long solo session or for sharing a round with two or three people. Allow 35 to 40 g of yerba mate. It takes all our bombillas.

AN EXCEPTIONAL WOODEN GOURD

CAROB WOOD, THE ORIGIN OF THIS GOURD

Our gourds are carved from the noble wood of the carob tree, one of Argentina's most emblematic trees. This dense, patiently dried wood is renowned for its exceptional sturdiness, warm grain and longevity — qualities that make it an outstanding material for crafting mate gourds.

Once a piece of wood has been selected for the beauty of its grain, it is hand-turned and sculpted in our partner artisan's workshop. Each gourd is then polished piece by piece, until the natural nuances of the carob wood are revealed — a wood that develops a patina over the cebadas and grows more beautiful with time.

Curing is simple - we've written a complete guide: The wooden gourd curing guide.

Everything about your Fusion Mate Gourd - Carob Wood

Does this wooden gourd need curing before the first use?
Yes, carob wood needs a light curing. Nourish the raw inside with a knob of unsalted butter or neutral oil, let it absorb, fill with mate, pour in hot water at 70–80 °C up to the neck, leave to rest, scrape the inside, then rinse with lukewarm water without soap and air-dry, opening upwards. The full protocol is in our guide to curing a wooden gourd.
How do I care for this gourd day to day?
Rinse the inside with lukewarm water without soap, wipe, then let it air-dry, opening upwards. A light greasing now and then keeps the wood supple. For the outside, a soft, dry cloth is enough: the lacquer and varnish protect the wood day to day. Above all, avoid the dishwasher and prolonged soaking, which can damage the gourd.
What is the capacity, and how much mate should I use?
This gourd holds about 240 ml. Allow 35 to 40 g of leaves for a 240 ml gourd, with water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. See our traditional mate preparation.
Why is it called "Fusion"?
Because it brings together two finishes on the same wood: a brush-applied black lacquer that covers the base and rises in points towards the neck, and the bare carob wood, simply varnished, which lets the grain show. The boundary between the two is drawn by hand, piece by piece.
What wood is it turned from?
From solid carob wood (algarrobo), a dense species from Argentina, renowned for its resistance to moisture and its longevity. It is carved from a single block and its inside is hollowed by hand, with no lining or coating: the walls keep the marks of the tool.
What do the four nails represent?
Set on the bare wood face, the four steel nails trace the Southern Cross, the Cruz del Sur: the best-known constellation of the southern sky, present on the flags of Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, and the landmark of navigators and of the gauchos of the pampa since forever. Discreet, it reminds you with every sip where mate comes from.
Will my gourd be identical to the one in the photo?
Not exactly. The lacquer is applied by hand with a brush: the shape of its points, the position of the nails and the grain of the wood vary slightly from one piece to another. That is the signature of 100% handcrafted work — your gourd is unique.
