A first: a carob wood gourd that needs no curing. The outside is hand-carved from solid carob wood (algarrobo), dense and resistant to moisture. The inside is an anodised aluminium lining. No curing needed!

An anodised aluminium interior, no curing
No curing required: a rinse with hot water and your first mate is ready. Ideal for keeping hot water warm for longer, and perfect for tereré. Around it, the solid carob wood insulates naturally: the mate stays hot, the tereré stays cool, and your hand never burns.

The tereré gourd
Tereré is prepared with ice-cold water, one or two ice cubes and a few mint leaves or a slice of lemon. For this, stainless steel gourds or this anodised aluminium one are preferred for their thermal performance.

A unique wood, piece by piece
Each gourd is turned from a different block of carob wood: the grain, the reflections and the shades vary from one piece to another. The one you receive looks exactly like no other. Over time, the wood develops a patina and warms up.

With its roughly 200 ml, it is filled two-thirds with yerba mate, i.e. 20 to 30 g. This gourd suits all our bombillas.

AN EXCEPTIONAL WOODEN GOURD

CAROB WOOD, THE ORIGIN OF THIS GOURD

Our gourds are carved from the noble wood of the carob tree, one of Argentina's most emblematic trees. This dense, patiently dried wood is renowned for its exceptional sturdiness, warm grain and longevity — qualities that make it an outstanding material for crafting mate gourds.

Once a piece of wood has been selected for the beauty of its grain, it is hand-turned and sculpted in our partner artisan's workshop. Each gourd is then polished piece by piece, until the natural nuances of the carob wood are revealed — a wood that develops a patina over the cebadas and grows more beautiful with time.

Curing is simple - we've written a complete guide: The wooden gourd curing guide.

Everything about your Insulated Mate Gourd - Carob Wood

Do I need to cure this gourd before the first use?
No. Its anodised aluminium interior needs no curing: no greasing, no overnight rest, no scraping. Rinse it with hot water and prepare your first mate. It is the first wooden gourd in our collection to do without it.
What is anodised aluminium, and why this choice?
Anodising is an electrochemical treatment that thickens and hardens the natural oxide layer of aluminium. The result: a non-porous, corrosion-resistant and taste-neutral surface, on a very light metal — the gourd weighs only 200 g. It is the ideal lining for a wooden or natural gourd: it retains neither moisture nor aromas, protects the wood and needs no curing.
Does the drink come into contact with the aluminium?
No: it is in contact with the anodised layer, a hard, non-porous oxide surface that forms a barrier between the metal and the mate. It is the same treatment used on high-end anodised aluminium bottles and kitchen utensils. It stays intact as long as you avoid the dishwasher and abrasive sponges.
Can I make tereré in it?
Yes, it is one of its best uses. Tereré, the traditional cold mate of Paraguay, is prepared with ice-cold water: fill the gourd half or two-thirds with yerba, tilt it, slip one or two ice cubes into the hollow and pour in very cold water. The solid wood insulates the cold, and the insulated interior is ideal. See our guide to tereré.
What is the capacity, and how much mate should I use?
This gourd holds about 200 ml. Allow 25 to 30 g of leaves for a 200 ml gourd, i.e. filling it two-thirds full. See our traditional mate preparation.
How do I care for this gourd day to day?
Rinse the inside with hot water after each session and let it dry opening upwards. For the wood, a soft, dry cloth is enough. Do not put it in the dishwasher, and avoid abrasive sponges and prolonged soaking, which can damage the wood.
What wood is it turned from?
From solid carob wood (algarrobo), a dense species from Argentina, renowned for its resistance to moisture and its longevity.
Will my gourd be identical to the one in the photo?
Not exactly. Each piece is made by hand from a different block of carob wood: the grain, the reflections and the shades of the veins vary from one gourd to another. That is the signature of 100% handcrafted work — your gourd is unique.
