THE BENEFITS OF MATE

Mate is considered a "superfood".

This infusion, drunk for thousands of years, is prized for its benefits:

  • Gentle, natural energy: Unlike coffee, mate's caffeine is released gradually, providing lasting stimulation without jitters or shakes.
  • Mental and physical clarity: Mateine stimulates body and mind alike, keeping you focused, active and calm at once.
  • Rich in antioxidants: Mate is antioxidant-rich - about twice as much as green tea!
  • Muscle recovery and fat burning: A favorite among athletes, mate supports muscle recovery and naturally supports the metabolism.

A SINGULAR TERROIR

At 900 meters of altitude, our mate grows in the heart of the biodiversity of the Santa Catarina region, in the great valley of the Iguaçu river, Brazil.

As with wine, terroir has a decisive influence on mate's final flavor. The minerals in the soil bring more or less bitterness, length or astringency to the final brew.

This region has the distinction of producing a high-quality mate that is particularly balanced, with herbal, floral notes and moderate bitterness.

TRADITIONAL ORGANIC FARMING

For over 100 years, our partner has kept their passion and know-how alive, growing a native yerba renowned for its original taste and famed for its smoothness.

The leaves of this organic yerba mate are harvested at maturity every 12 months. After harvest, the mate is dried naturally (smoke-free) before being enjoyed fresh, or going through an additional stage of aging or roasting.

Des questions ?

Tout savoir sur votre Organic Aged Mate - Eco Refill 500g

What does the Organic 18-month aged Mate taste like?
A mature profile: nutty, fruity and floral, with a bitterness close to that of a walnut. 18 months of ageing give it a roundness that green mate does not have.
What cut is this mate?
A cut with no stems and no powder: leaves only. The mate is softer on the palate and the bombilla never clogs. See our article on the different yerba mate cuts.
What does 18 months of ageing bring?
During ageing, the leaves rest and lose their raw green edge: the profile gains roundness and aromatic depth, rather like ageing a wine or maturing a cheese. The bitterness softens and moves closer to that of a walnut.
What difference does smoke-free drying make?
A mate dried without smoke keeps its original green profile, free of the wood-fire notes that mask the terroir. It is a choice of taste and of health, since it also avoids PAHs — and it is what sets our mates apart from yerbas dried the traditional way over an open hearth.
How do I prepare this mate in a gourd?
Fill the gourd two thirds full — allow 25 to 30 g of leaves per 200 ml — tilt it to form a slope, slide the bombilla into the hollow, then pour water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. See our guide to the traditional preparation of mate.
How much caffeine does this mate contain?
Our laboratory analyses measure around 140 mg of caffeine per 1 L of brew, which is one full mate session: as much as a coffee, but released far more gradually.
How does it come packaged?
Your mate comes in a 500 g resealable pouch. It opens at the back by pulling a tab, which forms a pouring spout so you can fill the gourd without spilling. Then close the zip again and store the pouch away from light and strong smells.
How long does this mate keep?
Two years at least, provided you close the zip after each use and keep the pouch away from light and strong smells. Mate leaves are highly sensitive to surrounding aromas: keep them out of the spice cupboard and away from the coffee.
Is this mate certified organic?
Yes, and it also carries Demeter certification — the biodynamic label, stricter still than organic. Our entire range is certified organic by ECOCERT and Demeter.
Where does this mate come from?
It is grown in agroforestry in Santa Catarina, in the Iguaçu valley in Brazil, at 900 metres of altitude, by our partner grower whose family has farmed there for more than a hundred years. The leaves are dried without smoke. See our article from the soil to the cup.
