THE BENEFITS OF MATE

Mate is considered a "superfood".

This infusion, drunk for thousands of years, is prized for its benefits:

  • Gentle, natural energy: Unlike coffee, mate's caffeine is released gradually, providing lasting stimulation without jitters or shakes.
  • Mental and physical clarity: Mateine stimulates body and mind alike, keeping you focused, active and calm at once.
  • Rich in antioxidants: Mate is antioxidant-rich - about twice as much as green tea!
  • Muscle recovery and fat burning: A favorite among athletes, mate supports muscle recovery and naturally supports the metabolism.

A GRAND CRU TERROIR

Grown using agroforestry, a method that lets the plant draw its nutrients from the rich, diverse biodiversity of southern Brazil.

From the terroir of São Mateus do Sul, in southern Paraná, this mate is a Grand Cru thanks to its terroir and the denser shade provided by the imposing Araucaria trees and the care given to the plant from harvest to final product.

As the leaves grow more slowly, the flavors of the yerba mate concentrate further, acquiring a richer, fruitier, more complex taste.

RESPONSIBLE FARMING

On top of being a grand cru, our mate is grown with respect for the environment and everyone involved.

Organic for over 50 years, our leaves are harvested at maturity every two years, to reach exceptional quality and balance.

Fair-trade: our values drive us every day to build a viable model. Beyond providing good working and living conditions for everyone in the production chain, concrete actions are taken daily to support the region's development.

This mate is dried naturally (smoke-free).

Tout savoir sur votre Organic Green Mate Grand Cru - Eco Refill 250g

What does the Organic Grand Cru Green Mate taste like?
Fresh, refined and green: all the purity of green mate, with no aggressive bitterness. It is the most direct expression of the São Mateus do Sul terroir.
What makes a mate a Grand Cru?
For us, a Grand Cru is a mate that comes from a single terroir and from a harvest taken at full maturity, every two years — where conventional yerba is cut every year, sometimes twice. Two years of patience give riper leaves, far more concentrated in aroma. The logic is exactly that of a grand cru in wine: one place, one timescale, one craft. See our article on Grand Cru mate, the alternative to green tea.
Why harvest only every two years?
Because maturity cannot be rushed. By letting the plant rest for two full years between pickings, the leaves build an aromatic concentration that annual harvests never reach. The yield is lower; the cup is better. Every leaf is then picked by hand.
Where does this Grand Cru mate come from?
From the terroir of São Mateus do Sul, in the south of Paraná, regarded as the finest growing area in southern Brazil. It grows in agroforestry, in the shade of the Araucarias — the Paraná pine — which lets it draw its nutrients from untouched biodiversity. This terroir has been farmed organically for over 50 years. See our article from the soil to the cup.
What cut is this mate?
A well-balanced medium cut: fine enough to release the aromas, coarse enough not to clog the bombilla. It works just as well in the gourd as it does as a simple infusion. See our article on the different yerba mate cuts.
Is this mate smoke-dried?
No, it is dried without smoke and never comes into contact with the fire. The profile stays clean and green, free of the smoky notes that mask the terroir — which is precisely what lets you taste the place rather than the process.
How do I prepare this mate in a gourd?
Fill the gourd two thirds full — allow 25 to 30 g of leaves per 200 ml — tilt it to form a slope, slide the bombilla into the hollow, then pour water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. See our guide to the traditional preparation of mate.
How much caffeine does this mate contain?
Our laboratory analyses measure around 140 mg of caffeine per 1 L of brew, which is one full mate session: as much as a coffee, but released far more gradually.
How does it come packaged?
The mate comes in a 250 g resealable pouch fitted with a zip. Close it again after each use and store it away from light and strong smells: mate leaves pick up surrounding aromas very easily.
How long does this mate keep?
Two years at least, provided you reseal the pouch properly after each use and keep it away from light and strong smells.
Is this mate certified organic?
Yes, it is certified organic by ECOCERT and Demeter — the biodynamic certification, stricter still than organic alone. The terroir it comes from has been farmed organically for over 50 years.
