This Torpedo mate gourd exists as a single piece. It was made entirely by hand by Cristian, master silversmith in Uruguay. It brings together on one piece the two most meticulous skills he masters best: chiseling on wax and the gilded bronze overlay, this time pushed to its peak with a finely chiseled single-piece overlay of 4 cm. A true masterpiece.

The rim
The rim is shaped from silversmith-grade alpaca, denser and purer than ordinary alpaca, which does not oxidise. The decoration is chiseled by hand on wax: the metal is laid on a bed of wax that supports it during the chisel work, allowing a fine, deep relief without deforming the piece. The acanthus leaves are chiseled into the mass; the volutes are a solid gilded bronze overlay, chiseled from a single piece and fixed onto the alpaca.

The gourd and the leather
The gourd comes from southern Brazil, chosen for its shape and the thickness of its wall, then dried for several months. It is sheathed in burgundy cowhide, hand-stitched with light thread in saddle stitch. The cross-shaped base forms four feet that stabilise the gourd and protect it.

Use
This is a natural gourd: an overnight curing is needed before the first mate (curing guide). Capacity approx. 200 ml, i.e. about 25 g of yerba mate. It takes all our bombillas; the Signature alpaca and bronze bombilla is its natural companion.

Crafting these gourds is a meticulous process that starts with selecting the sturdiest, best-formed squashes from Brazil.

Drawing on his expertise, Cristian sculpts and chisels each gourd with incomparable care. The band, in a more refined Alpaca alloy (easily mistaken for silver), is worked by hand to guarantee unmatched finesse and durability. Every detail is designed to offer not just a functional gourd, but a unique work of art.

These gourds stand out for their rarity and elegance. Each model is made in limited edition, making every gourd a truly unique piece. The time devoted to their creation, from the growth of the squash to Cristian's final touch, is a pledge of quality and durability, guaranteeing an extraordinary mate experience.

Questions?

Everything about your Torpedo Silversmith Mate Gourd - Wax-Chiseled Alpaca and Gilded Bronze

Do I need to cure this gourd before the first use?
Yes. The gourd is pre-cured and pre-smoothed by the craftsman, so one night is enough: fill it with mate leaves, pour in hot water without going above the rim, leave to rest for 12 hours, empty it, scrape the inside with a spoon and let it air-dry, opening upwards. The step-by-step is in our curing guide.
What is silversmith-grade alpaca?
Alpaca is a silvery alloy, typical of South American silversmithing: it does not oxidise and keeps its shine. Silversmith grade refers to an alpaca that is denser and purer than ordinary alpaca, reserved for fine hand-worked pieces.
What does "chiseled on wax" mean?
It is the traditional silversmiths' technique: the alpaca plate is laid on a bed of wax that supports it during the work with chisel and hammer. The wax absorbs the blows without deforming the metal, which allows a fine, deep relief. All the leaf decoration on this rim is obtained this way, by hand.
Is the gilded bronze a paint or a plating?
Neither. The volutes are a solid gilded bronze overlay in a single piece, 8 cm long, finely chiseled and then fixed onto the alpaca by the master silversmith. It does not flake and develops a patina over time, like the rest of the rim.
What is the capacity, and how much mate should I use?
This gourd holds about 200 ml. Allow about 25 g of leaves. See our traditional mate preparation.
How do I care for this gourd day to day?
Rinse the gourd with hot water without soap and let it dry opening upwards. Wipe the leather and the rim with a soft, dry cloth; never immerse the gourd. See our care guide.
Is it really a single piece?
Yes. This rim was chiseled and mounted only once by Cristian, master silversmith in Uruguay. The piece you see in the photos is the one you receive.
