Mate, what is it exactly?

Yerba mate is a plant derived from the yerba mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis), a species in the holly family that produces small berries that bloom into flowers.

The leaves are hand-picked, dried and cut before consumption.
What makes the plant is that it is one of the very few plants that produces caffeine, and therefore provides stimulation when consumed.

Yerba mate was actually first cultivated by the Guarani and Tupi peoples, native to Paraguay and southern Brazil respectively, who believed it offered both medicinal and supernatural benefits.
Once Spanish colonization of Paraguay took hold in the 17th century, consumption of the hot infusion gradually began to spread to parts of Argentina, Uruguay and beyond.

What are the benefits of mate?

Mate is first of all a natural stimulant, which is the most known and appreciated benefit of consumers. Its leaves are filled with many active ingredients such as matein, iron, magnesium, calcium and vitamins (A, B1, B2, B5, C and E).

Yerba mate improves your cognitive performance , such as your ability to learn, perceive and concentrate.

Also, yerba mate is beneficial for health. Very rich in antioxidants (twice as much as green tea), it prevents certain types of cancer and reduces the risks of cardiovascular diseases.

How to drink mate?

The South American drink can be consumed in different forms:

- In calabash

Traditionally, mate is drunk using a calabash and a bombilla. The calabash is a container made of gourd, glass, wood or steel, where the yerba is infused with hot water.
The bombilla (or filter straw) is a straw used to filter and drink the infusion.

- In tea ball

- In a coffee maker

- In tea bag

When to drink mate?

We recommend drinking mate first thing in the morning for a boost. Indeed, concentrated in mateine, yerba is a natural stimulant. Your infusion will help you fight against physical and mental fatigue for the day.

Of course, it is possible to drink it at lunchtime, at work and even after sports. Yerba is a drink very popular with athletes and footballers for its help in recovery.
