What is in the Alpaca Torpedo Mate Kit?
The kit brings together an alpaca Torpedo mate gourd with a 5-year warranty, an alpaca bombilla with a lifetime warranty, and 500 g of organic yerba mate of your choice. A getting-started guide is sent to you by email.
Does the bombilla match the gourd?
Yes. In this kit, the bombilla picks up the material of the rim: the gourd with its alpaca rim comes with an alpaca bombilla. The two pieces form a coherent set, designed to go together.
Does the gourd need curing before the first use?
Yes, curing is essential for a calabash gourd. Because our gourds are pre-cured and pre-smoothed by our craftsman, a single night is enough: fill it with mate leaves and hot water at 85 °C without ever going above the rim, leave it to stand for 12 h, empty it, scrape the inside with a spoon, then let it air-dry with the opening facing up. How do I make my first mate with this kit?
Fill the gourd two thirds full with leaves — allow 25 to 30 g per 200 ml — tilt it to one side, slide the bombilla into the hollow, then pour water at 70–80 °C, never boiling. The whole ritual, step by step, is in our guide to the traditional preparation of mate.
How do I look after the kit day to day?
Rinse the gourd with hot water, no soap, and leave it to dry with the opening facing up. For the bombilla, a rinse after every session, then a monthly clean with food-grade baking soda and a polish with a silver polishing stone. See our guides: caring for your gourd and caring for your bombilla.
Can I choose the mate that comes with the kit?
Yes. The kit includes 500 g of organic yerba mate, chosen from 5 varieties when you place your order. That way you build your kit around the profile that appeals to you — soft and green, roasted, aged and intense.
